Newcomer’s Guide to Vancouver Startup Community

As soon as I read A Hitchhiker’s Guide to Toronto Startup Ecosystem, which draws it’s inspiration from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Boston Tech Community, I knew that Vancouver needed one of it’s own. Thanks to both authors for inspiring this resource.

I hope that this guide helps anyone new to Vancouver, new to a career in startups, or with a newfound vigor for life. to get out there and make some friends, learn from some of the best and brightest, and blur the work/life divide. In the spirit of inclusivity…

No problem! I was able to sit in for the Intro to WordPress workshop that happened a few weeks ago and thought it was interesting. Have you checked out your Vancouver chapter?

    Thanks for featuring Weeve! :D

Pretty shocked that Indochino didn’t make the list of Notable Startups and that Network Hub wasn’t on the Co-working space list. Why is that?

    • http://cmgrblog.terakristen.com/ Tera Kristen

They are added – thanks for reminding me.

I was hoping someone would create a Vancouver Startup Guide. Thanks Tera and thanks for including Strutta and Launch @ Grow on your list.

      Yep great job Tera!

Cool resource Tera, but you missed ethicalDeal! We were named one of Fast Company’s top 25 women run start-ups to watch and have been featured on CTV, Vancouver Sun, Techvibes etc. for our innovative approach to marketing green brands. We’ve bootstrapped our way to profitability and now employ a team of 10 in our Gastown office. We just launched grocery deals (http://ethicaldeal.com/vancouver/groceries), which is changing the way CPG’s market their products. Follow us @ethicalDeal.

I think you owe Tera a CPM based on the number of people who read this comment….

      • Annalea Krebs

Haha I can always count on you Ian. ;) Placeling should’ve made it on the list too! So many cool start-ups in Van!

  • Chris

Hey Tera! Thanks for including @getspokal in your list.

Glad somebody made the guide. Nice to see.

The notable list is off though.

I wanted to direct people to companies that may potentially be hiring. Perhaps not the best heading – notable is definitely a question of taste.

It would be cool if you considered including http://www.xomodigital.com on your startup list. They are a Yaletown based mobile app company that developed the official mobile app for the Vancouver 2010 Olympics and have developed world class event apps for SXSW, Social Media Week, Sundance Film Festival, Austin City Limits, Lalapalooza, London 2012 Olympics, VIFF, Live at Squamish and many more.

Total disclosure, this is my hubby’s company but they are doing some super cool and innovative work.

Oh I know them – I loved the SXSW and Social Media Week apps. Cool – thanks for reminding me about them.

      Awesome! Thanks for adding it!

Now I just also need the how-to guide please.

      Haha – me too.

Great list! As a newcomer to the Vancouver scene this is a fantastic resource. We have a monthly tech start up beginning on November 19th, that will run the 3rd Monday of every month, for techies, coders, developers, start ups, pixel pushers, anyone that is awesome in the tech community… You should join us! http://www.meetup.com/IMAGINEERISM/ Would love to see you there and speak with you more!

No problem at all – I’m really glad that people are finding it useful.

Clio’s done well as a startup and they’re growing pretty fast. They’re also hiring quite a few people http://www.goclio.com/about/career_opportunities/

  • http://twitter.com/teamMBH Team myBestHelper

Great post! And please add us in under notable startups – myBestHelper (www.mybesthelper.com) won 1st place Startup Weekend Vancouver 2011 and 3rd place at the 2012 New Ventures BC Competition – and incidentally they http://www.newventuresbc.com/ as well as ACETECH, BCTIA and BCIC are missing from your list. Again – GREAT job getting this started….
